Advance-CTR Machine Learning for Health Seminar Series: Suresh Venkatasubramanian, PhD
This hour-long webinar is presented by Dr. Suresh Venkatasubramanian; Professor of Computer Science and Data Science at Brown University. Dr. Venkatasubramanian presents on "The Role of AI and ML in Amplifying Health Disparities." AI – and more generally data-driven technologies – present great opportunities for progress in the world of health care, whether in new kinds of detection technologies, diagnostics, clinical care, or health care management and administration. The promise is both scientific – the hope that AI can lead us to new discoveries in medicine – and about cost/scaling — the idea that automation can supplant or complement existing processes by being more efficient. And yet, with this promise comes a challenge: the data that fuels AI/ML based automation represents decades of historical disparities, and these disparities invariably find their way into the predictions these systems seek to make. Further, as scholars of science and technology have long observed, inserting automation in a plug-and-play fashion into complex sociotechnical systems leads to unintended and often harmful outcomes. In this talk, he will discuss some recent examples that point to the need for caution and deliberation when deploying AI/ML in health systems and suggest some guiding principles for those wishing to make the most use of AI/ML. These principles will be drawn from the Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights recently released by the White House.
